Annual Welcome Reception
Join us as we kick off the FWC’s 43rd year! Mark your calendar for an evening of food, wine and friendship. Kristen Green, local author
Kristen is the author of Something Must Be Done about Prince Edward County. She grew up in Farmville, VA, is a long time newspaper reporter, and a resident of The Fan. Her book is about the impact of integration, school closures, and a private segregation academy on her community in Prince Edward County, VA. Kristen tells a “gripping, enlightening, and deeply moving” story that many haven’t heard. The reader gets a clearer perspective to today’s current racial struggles as a nation. Kristen will discuss her writing process and the impact her book has had on her hometown.

Melissa Rickey, Principal of Binford Middle School
Melissa Rickey is the new Principal of Binford Middle School and is implementing two new curricula in the school. The first is the College Board Springboard program, an academically intense curriculum geared toward preparing students for rigorous high schools. The second is an arts-integrated curriculum that will focus on using the arts to enforce lessons in core subjects with teacher training from the Kennedy Center and several local art collaborations. Rickey, 35, earned both a Bachelor of Arts and Masters in Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been a teacher and an administrator in Chesterfield County, honing an approach to education that combines arts and academics. She worked on arts-based programs at Robious Middle School and had worked with a variety of Advanced Placement courses at James River High School, where she was most recently Assistant Principal.

Robert Bolling, CEO of ChildSavers
ChildSavers, formerly Memorial Child Guidance Clinic, is a source of hope for Central Virginia’s children. Founded in 1924, the Clinic's legacy of innovation, leadership and care for children has endeared it to three generations of Richmond citizens. Early in its history, ChildSavers turned exclusively to addressing the mental health and developmental needs of children. ChildSavers is a community-supported, non-profit agency governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

Keith Tignor, State Apiarist
Rescheduled from last winter, we will start the evening with a talk by the State’s Apiarist Keith Tignor on, of course, beekeeping! Following will be a discussion on raising chickens and planting small gardens in The Fan. Join us for an informative evening on how to cultivate your own “mini” Fan farm.

Institute for Contemporary Arts (ICA)
VCU’s 43,000-square-foot Institute for Contemporary Art will be an incubator for interdisciplinary experimentation for the entire university while simultaneously providing opportunities for collaboration both locally and internationally. The Director of Education will be joining us to discuss the ICA's programming for the coming year, how they are working in the community and what we can do to help.
